Refactoring Boundary

چکیده
We argue that the limit of the propagation of the heap effects of a source code modification is determined by the aliasing structure of method parameters in a trace of the method calls that cross a boundary which partitions the heap. Further, that this aliasing structure is sufficient to uniquely determine the state of the part of the heap which has not been affected. And we give a definition of what it means for a part of the heap to be unaffected by a source code modification. This can be used to determine the correctness of a refactoring. 1998 ACM Subject Classification D.2.4 Software/Program Verification

On the refactoring of activity labels in business process models
Large corporations increasingly utilize business process models for documenting and redesigning their operations. The extent of such modeling initiatives with several hundred models and dozens of often hardly trained modelers calls for automated quality assurance. While formal properties of control flow can easily be checked by existing tools, there is a notable gap for checking the quality of ...
متن کاملKnowledge Patterns for the Web: extraction, tranformation and reuse
This thesis aims at investigating methods and software architectures for discovering what are the typical and frequently occurring structures used for organizing knowledge in the Web. We identify these structures as Knowledge Patterns (KPs), i.e., small, well connected units of meaning which are task-based, well-grounded, and cognitively sound. KPs are an abstraction of frames as introduced by ...
متن کاملAssessing the Quality of Refactoring Patterns for Introducing Design Patterns
Refactoring is a well-known process to improve the code design of object-oriented programs. Recently, several literatures focus on refactoring with introducing design patterns that are general repeated solutions to common problems in software design. For making it easy to perform such refactoring, a lot of refactoring patterns are proposed. Each refactoring pattern includes a description of ref...
متن کاملAssisting Refactoring Tool Development through Refactoring Characterization
Tool support for refactoring is widespread nowadays. The most widely known IDEs include refactoring support, and many refactoring-specific tools are also available. Developers are aware of refactoring activities and they do refactor their applications even manually or in an assisted way. For the users of refactoring tools, the current state of the art is well documented in refactoring catalogs,...
متن کاملWhy Don't People Use Refactoring Tools?
Tools that perform refactoring are currently under-utilized by programmers. As more advanced refactoring tools are designed, a great chasm widens between how the tools must be used and how programmers want to use them. In this position paper, we characterize the dominant process of refactoring, demonstrate that many research tools do not support this process, and initiate a call to action for d...
